Why
Ride?
April
2001, was a pivotal month for me. Among other occurrences in my
personal life, I decided to embark on one of the biggest challenges
of my life
committing to join nearly 2,000 others from around
the world and participate in the Canada to US AIDS Vaccine Ride.
Beginning in Montreal, Quebec on September 5, I would ride to Portland,
Maine
400 miles down long winding and sloping roads of New
England.
Was
it a moment of confusion of just how long I would be on a bike?
Sleeping in a tent for 4 days during? It probably sounded crazy
to those who know me. I hadn't truly been on a bicycle since my
trusty green Schwinn Varsity I was given for my 10th birthday. But,
the decision to participate came after thoughtful consideration
about the physical, mental, financial and emotional challenge such
an adventure would involve. And, when I balanced my sacrifice against
the lives that are lost each year from AIDS, my involvement really
seemed small.
